Tax is applied to the discounted price, as stores charge it.

How it works

Three steps, in the order stores actually charge you:

Savings = price × discount%   →   Sale price = price − savings
Final total = (sale price × (1 + tax%)) × quantity

Sales tax applies to the discounted price in almost all US states, so a bigger discount also shrinks your tax bill slightly.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage to get the savings, then subtract from the price. For example, 20% off $100 saves $20, so the sale price is $80.

Is sales tax charged before or after the discount?

In almost all US states, sales tax applies to the discounted sale price, not the original price. This calculator applies tax after the discount, which matches how stores charge you.

How do stacked discounts work, like 20% then 10%?

They multiply, not add: 20% off then 10% off equals 28% off total (0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72), not 30%. Run the result of the first discount through the calculator again for the second.

What is a good discount percentage?

It depends on the product, but 20–30% is a solid everyday sale, 40–50% is a deep clearance discount, and anything above 70% is usually final-sale or loss-leader pricing worth double-checking.
